What am I supposed to do with my life?
It’s a question most of us ask at some point in our vocational journeys. While we may not say, “What is my calling?” in so many words, the desire to connect our passions, skills, and roles to a deeper story for our lives is at the heart of the questions we ask today.
Whether we’re wondering how to invest our time, how to chart a career path, or how to juggle diverse responsibilities, we look for a unifying theme to make sense of it all. And in our rare, quiet moments, we hope that God delights in us and guides our efforts.
Which is where calling comes in.
In light of Scripture, calling is an expansive invitation to live with God and in service to others through every area and season of life. Broader than any single job or relational role, calling serves as a throughline or connecting theme that tells us WHO we are and HOW we work more than the specifics of WHAT we do to earn a living.
A broad understanding of calling is compelling for women because it unites the diverse roles we carry that, at times, may conflict with each other. It also challenges cultural messages you may have heard about how a “godly woman” acts in the world.
